Anytime is a great time for a road trip. Now that we have undecked the halls (yea, I made that up), we can pack a bag and get out of dodge. Head on to the Eastern Seashore in Maryland for some history. February is Black History Month but you can take this trip anytime of the year.
Once there, you will quickly realize that this will be a road trip to remember. Dorchester is lovingly referred to as the Heart of The Chesapeake County. The area was given the nickname simply because of its physical heart shape on the map.
Rich in history and heritage, Dorchester is the birthplace of Underground Railroad conductor, Harriet Tubman. After escaping slavery herself, Mrs. Tubman returned to the area several times to free other enslaved people. With help from other conductors and abolitionist, Mrs. Tubman helped to guide them to freedom in the north. Dorchester consists of quaint waterfront towns with pristine rivers and marshlands. Here, traditional ways of life still exists in the area so you will see working boats and fertile farm fields along with original landscapes.
The Underground Railroad byway is and all American road and is a 125 mile driving route. To get the best experience, travel the byway from south to north over the course of two days. Although it can be done in a minimum of six hours. The byway consist of over 20 documented sites of the Underground Railroad activity. There are many scenic vistas to stop and visit that are associated with Harriet Tubman. You will find plenty of opportunities to do some hiking, paddling, biking, shopping and dining.
Visit the Underground Railroad State Park. The visitors center is 17 acres and is located adjacent to the Blackwater National wildlife Refuge. You can take advantage of the many exhibits offered along with special programs and tours. Other points of interest along the byway to visit are
the Harriett Tubman Educational Center, Bucktown Village Store and the Dorchester County Courthouse just to name a few. Dorchester will wow you with its rich history, heritage and beauty.
